Expert Advice

Yeo Shu Pin

Yeo Shu Pin has spent 15 years in Malaysian legal practice across Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A), banking, intellectual property, and construction before making renewable energy a core focus of her practice. She did not stumble into renewable energy. She chose it.

She worked directly with solar developers, investors, EPC contractors, subcontractors, land owners, offtakers, system owners, BESS owners and operators, BESS technology suppliers, REC and carbon credit market participants on Malaysian solar, BESS, REC and carbon-related transactions. She understood the contracts, the regulatory frameworks, and the commercial pressures her clients were navigating. She also saw how renewable energy legal work requires more than general contract drafting. It requires an understanding of how PPAs, EPCC contracts, O&M arrangements, land/roof leasing, BESS leasing and supply arrangements, REC and green attributes provisions, carbon credit transaction documents, tariff structures, performance obligations and regulatory requirements work together.

She founded Shu Pin & Associates on 1 April 2025 to do it differently. One practice. One focus.

The Background

Shu Pin was admitted to the Malaysian Bar on 13 June 2011. Her career since then has covered a deliberate range — M&A at Messrs Azmi & Associates, trademark practice across Malaysia, Singapore, the EU and US at a pharmaceutical company, broad commercial work at Messrs Jeff Leong, Poon & Wong, banking and insolvency at Hong Leong Bank Berhad, and then renewable energy advisory at Messrs Afif Rahman & Chong.

That breadth is not incidental. A renewable energy project touches contract law, corporate structuring, regulatory compliance, financing, and land arrangements simultaneously. Shu Pin has worked across all of it.

She holds a Master of Laws (LL.M) from Universiti Malaya and a First Class LL.B with Honours from Universiti Utara Malaysia where she was awarded both the Vice Chancellor Gold Medal and the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic & International) Gold Medal. She has also completed the Business Sustainability Management Programme at the University of Cambridge, Institute for Sustainability Leadership and Introduction to Sustainable Development in Practice e-Course with United Nations Institute for Training and Research.

She serves as an Independent Non-Executive Director of Cropmate Berhad, sits on committees at the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM), the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM), and the Klang Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCCI), is an accredited mediator with Malaysian International Mediation Centre (MIMC), and holds advisory roles with several embassies in Malaysia.

In 2025, within the firm’s first year of operation, Shu Pin & Associates was recognised by AsiaLaw as a Notable Firm in the Energy sector. In 2026, the firm was shortlisted as a finalist for Energy and Resources Law Firm of the Year at the ALB Malaysia Law Awards.

How We Work

How She Works

Shu Pin starts with the deal, not the document.

Before reviewing or drafting, she looks at the project structure, commercial model, regulatory position and risk allocation. The question is not only whether a clause is legally acceptable. The question is whether it works for the project. Her advice is direct, practical and early. Identify the risk before signing. Fix the structure before it becomes expensive. Draft the contract so the parties know exactly what they are committing to.

Shu Pin also writes about what she sees in practice; not theory. Her published articles on the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS), the Community Renewable Energy Aggregation Mechanism (CREAM), Bilateral Energy Supply Contract (BESC) structuring, Engineering, Procurement, Construction & Commissioning (EPCC) contracts, BESS project documents, carbon market documentation, solar asset acquisitions, and licensing requirements are read by the same developers and contractors who eventually become clients. That is deliberate.

She believes legal advice is most useful when it is specific, honest, and delivered early before a contract is signed, before a structure is committed to, before a problem becomes expensive. The best outcome of a legal engagement is one the client barely notices: the project moves forward cleanly because the groundwork was right.

When you engage this firm, you work with Shu Pin directly. Every call, every contract, every question.
